On
a hot afternoon in late July, Russell Evans. Preston Hartge and Jeff Smith
paced like expectant fathers. Their "baby" is a 32' x 88' x
11' deck barge designed and built at Smith Bros. yard in Galesville. The
barge was named for Evan (at right) since he welded the barge single-handedly.
Hydraulic jacks slowly raised the port side of the barge as she sat on
greased I-Beams. Finally, the angle was enough to let the barge slip smoothly
into the Chesapeake. The boys didn't have much time to enjoy their baby,
Preston delivered her to Coastal Designs for charter the following morning
and later that day the first load of steel was delivered for the next
barge and Russell started welding again.
